#19 USAO Tallies 36 Runs in Double-Header Sweep at Wiley College
MARSHALL, Texas – Sunday afternoon, the No. 19 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (4-1, 0-0 SAC) swept their double-header on the road at Wiley College (1-2, 0-0 GCAC). The Drovers won the first game 10-3, followed by a 26-4 triumph in the finale.
GAME 1-
The Drovers opened the day with a bang, tallying four runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Ben Lawson's 2-run homerun to left field.
Wiley College scored once in the bottom of the first inning, with a solo-homer to cut the deficit to 4-1.
USAO extended their lead with a run in the top of the second inning, and the score remained 5-1 until the top of the third, when the Drovers added four more runs. Nick Fleckenstein's plated three runs with a double, followed by a RBI-single from Ryan Duncan.
Science & Arts held a 9-1 lead until the bottom of the fourth when the Wildcats scored on another solo-homerun.
USAO added one more insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. Wiley scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was far too little, too late as the Drovers cruised to victory.
Megumi Fukuda earned the win on the mound as he pitched the opening 4.0 innings. Fukuda allowed two earned runs on three hits, and he struck out five batters.
Peyton McDowall, Nolan Gagnon, and Drew Shaver delivered relief performances.
As a team, the Drovers compiled 12 hits, coming from eight different players.
Ryan Duncan, Nick Fleckenstein, Gunnar Hansen, and Antonio Hrynkiw each recorded a pair of hits in the win. Nick Fleckenstein finished 2-3 with a double, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Hrynkiw concluded 2-5 with a double, while Ryan Duncan went 2-2 with a walk, a run scored and a run batted in. Gunnar Hansen went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Ben Lawson blasted a 2-run homerun as he finished 1-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Ryan Rodriguez, Peyton McDowall, and Gage Gaunt each singled in the opener.
GAME 2-
For the second game in a row, USAO used a big first inning to get the game out of reach early. Science & Arts tallied ELEVEN runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Gage Gaunt's 2-run homerun and four total RBI's in the inning.
Science & Arts strung together four more runs in the top of the second inning to extend the lead to 15-0.
Gabriel Arroyo blasted a 2-run homer to help the Drovers extend the lead to 17-0 in the top of the third.
USAO added one more run in the fourth inning, prior to scoring once more in the sixth inning. The Drovers held a 19-0 lead going into the seventh inning, when they would add seven more runs, before the Wildcats scored their only four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
As a team, the Drovers produced 18 hits, coming from 10 different players. Furthermore, 16 different Drovers scored at least one run in the win.
Josh Harrel got the start for USAO on the mound and delivered 3.0 perfect innings, allowing zero baserunners while striking out one batter.
Reed Butz relieved Harrel in the fourth inning, allowing zero runs on one hit and he struck out two batters. Cameron Johnson and Kaden Alexander each threw one scoreless inning, and both players struck out a pair of batters.
Caleb Hunter struck out one batter in the seventh inning,
Gage Gaunt and Gabriel Arroyo each led the USAO offense with 3-hit performances. Gaunt finished 3-3 with a homerun, three runs scored, and four runs batted in. Arroyo concluded 3-7 with a homer, three runs, and four RBI's.
Peyton McDowall, Will Hoch, Jayce Roberts, and William Bennett each added two hits in the win. McDowall, Hoch and Roberts each belted a pair of doubles and each of them scored twice.
Ryan Rodriguez doubled and drove in three runs. Christopher Martinez, Ben Lawson, and Gavin Machado each singled.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Drovers will now prepare for the highly anticipated Cajun Collision in Sterlington, Louisiana from February 11-12. On Saturday the 11th, the Drovers will open the weekend against Missouri Baptist University at 2:30 PM, followed by a showdown with Clarke University at 6:00 PM. On Sunday USAO will take on Texas A&M University Texarkana at 11:00 AM, followed by the finale against LSU-Alexandria at 2:30 PM
