Season Comes to a Close in Loss Against SAGU in SAC Quarterfinals
CHICKASHA, Okla. – Thursday evening, the No. 4 seeded University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (17-12, 14-8 SAC) opened the Oklahoma Ford Dealers Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a heartbreaking 100-92 loss against No. 5 seed Southwestern Assemblies University (20-9, 14-8 SAC).
On Thursday, both teams came out firing on offense and SAGU held a narrow 23-22 lead midway through the first half. The offenses continued to shine in the final minutes of the half and the Lions took a 54-46 lead into the break.
Following halftime, both teams went on runs and the score remained close throughout the half. With 10 minutes to play, USAO held a slim 71-70 lead, but the Lions were able to gain momentum down the stretch and advance to the semifinals.
As a team, the Drovers shot 34-68 (.500) from the field, and 16-38 (.421) from three-point range.
In comparison, the Lions shot 36-72 (.500) from the field, and 16-38 (.421) from deep.
SAGU held a 42-36 advantage in the rebounding battle, but the Drovers only committed seven turnovers, while the Lions fumbled the ball eight times.
The Drovers were whistled for 18 fouls, and SAGU was called for 14 infractions. The Drovers finished 8-12 (.667) from the line, and SAGU went 12-16 (.750).
Four different Drovers scored in double-figures in the loss, led by Samkelo Cele's 28-point performance. The incredible offensive performance was the ninth time this season that Cele has scored at least 27 points this season. On Thursday, Cele shot 11-18 from the field, including 3-6 from deep. Cele also hauled in six rebounds.
Gerard Makuntae recorded his 11th double-double of the season, with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Drover legend also added six assists and a pair of blocks.
Logan Dolan concluded with a season-high of 16 points, and he also dished out three assists.
Cejay Mann added 11 points off the bench. Cade Allen closed with eight points and three rebounds, while Jaden Harrell finished with eight points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Tyler Cauley added four points and three assists.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Drovers will now prepare for the 2023-24 season.
