Drover Softball to Host Women’s History Appreciation Night on March 6

CHICKASHA, Okla. – On Monday, March 6, the No. 3 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma softball team will be back in action at home as they host Women's History Appreciation Night as they face Benedictine College. First pitch of the first game of the double-header is scheduled for 4:00 PM, followed by game two at 6:00 PM at Bill Smith Ballpark.

As part of the festivities, Dr. Kathy Black will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, prior to game one of the twin-bill.

Kathy Black has more than 40 years of experience in education in Oklahoma, and she was inducted into the USAO Alumni Hall of Fame in 2016. She has been instrumental in the hospitality and camaraderie for which USAO's annual homecoming is known. She is the driving force behind the organization of off campus activities, including the Afterglow held each evening following functions held on campus. 

Black is a member of the Osage Tribe and has served on the Osage Tribal Education Committee. After receiving a bachelor's degree in physical education from OCW in 1958, she earned a master's in physical education in 1961 and a doctorate degree in higher education administration in 1971, both from the University of Oklahoma.

She was instrumental in the success of the Ready, Set, Now campaign at USAO. She served as co-chair of the alumni campaign which exceeded its fund raising goals.

She is a professor emeritus at the University of Central Oklahoma, where she retired in May 2001 after 35 years of service. Her teaching career began at El Reno High School where she taught from 1958 until 1960. She was a graduate assistant in the Department of Physical Education at OU and an instructor in the department.

She served on the Governor's Task for Physical Fitness and Sports for eight years, Oklahoma Affiliate, American Heart Association Board of Directors for five years, and Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator for the state of Oklahoma for one year.

Her numerous honors include OAHPERD Honor Award; OAHPERD Presidential Citation, 1985, 1987, 1991; SDAAHPERD Presidential Award, 1994; UCO-AAUP Faculty Service Award, 1996; Phi Delta Kappa, Service Key Award, 1987-88; National Girls and Women in Sport, Pathfinder Award for Oklahoma, 1995; National Girls and Women in Sport President's Award, 2004.
