Drover and Stars Split Thrilling Double-Header

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Tuesday evening, the No. 8 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (19-7, 9-1 SAC) battled to a split as they went extra innings in the double-header against No. 6 ranked Oklahoma City University (18-6, 5-1 SAC). Both games of the twin-bill went eight innings, with the Stars earning a 3-2 victory in the first game, followed by the Drovers claiming a thrilling 4-3 triumph in the finale.

-GAME 1-

After neither team was able to score in the first four innings, the Stars managed to push across a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Drovers were able to tie the score at 2-2 with one run in the bottom of the fifth, followed by one more in the sixth.

The score remained tied at 2-2 after seven frames, forcing the game to go into extra innings. The Stars scored once in the top of the eighth and the Drovers were unable to respond in the home half of the inning, thus suffering the loss in game one.

Despite suffering the loss, Sophie Williams was brilliant in the circle, going all 8.0 innings. Williams surrendered only two earned runs on five hits and she struck out five batters.

As a team, Science & Arts compiled four hits, coming from three different players. Jaycee Kievit led the way with a 2-3 performance, which included a homerun and two runs batted in.

Macenzie Ruth finished 1-3 with a single, while Sierra Selfridge went 1-4 with a run scored.

-GAME 2-

Unlike in the first game, the Drovers took an early lead in the second game of the day, scoring once in the bottom of the second inning on Jadyn Goucher's solo-homerun. The Stars tied the score with one run in the top of the fourth inning.

Neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie after seven full innings, forcing extras once again. Just as they did in the first game, OCU took the lead in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs. However, the Drovers were not done, responding with a trio of runs in the bottom of the eighth to complete the walk-off victory.

Abi Gregory improved her record to 11-2 with yet another stellar performance. The freshman has been selected as the Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week each of the last three weeks, and she made an early case for her fourth award in a row. Gregory went all 8.0 innings, allowing only two earned runs on six hits, and she struck out five batters.

As a team, the Drovers produced four hits in the win. Jadyn Goucher concluded 1-3 with a solo-homer, while Malea McMurtrey went 1-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in.

Jaycee Kievit concluded 1-2 with a single and an intentional walk. Macenzie Ruth finished 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
