#9 USAO Cruises to Victory on Senior Day Against Langston
CHICKASHA, Okla. – Friday afternoon, the No. 9 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (34-13, 24-7 SAC) closed out the regular season with a 10-0 victory on Senior Day against Langston University (6-37, 3-28 SAC). After originally being scheduled as a double-header the second game of the day was canceled due to thunderstorms in the area.
On Monday Science & Arts earned a pair of run-rule victories on the road at Langston, winning 19-1 and 16-4, respectively. With the sweep, the Drovers are now 22-0 against the Lions all-time, dating back to February 19, 2014.
Over the last seven games, USAO's offense has been scorching hot, outscoring opponents 74-12.
The Drovers conclude the regular season in second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings, 5.0 games back of OCU. Science & Arts will be the No. 2 seed and will host the SAC Tournament, along with Oklahoma City University from May 6-8.
The Drovers wasted no time taking the lead in Friday's game, scoring two runs in the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead into the third.
USAO added three runs in the third and fourth innings prior to shutting down the Lions in the top of the fifth, ending the game early due to the "mercy rule".
Sophie Williams got the start in the circle and improved her record to 17-6 with yet another strong performance. Williams did not allow a hit as she struck out three batters in 3.0 innings. Katelyn Trumbley and Lauryn Cottrell each delivered an inning of scoreless relief for the Drovers in the fourth and fifth innings.
As a team, the Drovers compiled 11 hits, coming from eight different players. Jaclyn Gray, Sierra Selfridge, and Kylie Milanic each recorded a pair of hits in the win. Selfridge finished 2-3 with a pair of runs, while Milanic went 2-3 with a triple, a run scored, and three runs batted in. Gray concluded 2-3 with a double, an inside the park homerun, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
Gray has been one of the best players in the country all season long, but she has elevated her game even more over the last eight games. The Chickasha native is batting 16-26 (.615), with two doubles, a triple, three homeruns, 12 runs scored, and 23 runs batted in.
Sophie Williams helped her own cause by going 1-2 with a double, a run scored, and a run batted in. Madelyn Blair concluded 1-3 with two RBIs, while Malea McMurtrey went 1-2 with a walk, two runs scored, and a run batted in. Jaycee Kievit and Jaylee Willis each finished 1-2 in the win.
