Drovers Use Big Second Half to Cruise Past WBU

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Saturday afternoon, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (8-5, 3-2 SAC) collected their third win in the last four games with a 5-1 performance against Wayland Baptist University (3-6-2, 2-3 SAC). With the win, the Drovers have defeated the Pioneers in eight consecutive matchups, dating back to September of 2007. Overall, USAO is now 18-4 against WBU all-time. 

 

After both teams got off to a slow start, WBU was able to crack the scoreless tie and took the first lead of the game in the 32nd minute. USAO was able to tie the score at 1-1 prior to halftime, courtesy of Aleigha Prince's first goal of the season, coming in the 35th minute. Neither team was able to score again prior to the halftime buzzer.

 

Following the break, the Drovers quickly captured the lead with Ilse de Jong's first goal of the season, assisted by Alicia Rey in the 47th minute of regulation. USAO immediately stretched the lead to 3-1 with Alicia Rey's first goal of the game, coming in the 49th minute. Rey scored her second of the game and 17thof the season in the 57th minute to extend the lead to 4-1. Rey's second goal was assisted by Luna Knoester.

The Drovers added one more insurance goal in the 85th minute, off the foot of Daniela Salinas for her third goal of the season, assisted by Alexis Mendez.

 

As a team, USAO attempted 19 shots, with 15 being on goal, while WBU attempted five shots, with two being on target. The Drovers were whistled for 13 fouls, while the Pioneers committed 16 infractions. 

 

Ashlyn Lonberg got the start for USAO between the pipes and made one save to improve her record to 3-0 this season.

 

Alicia Rey currently ranks No. 4 in the NAIA and No. 2 in the SAC in goals scored (17), while ranking No. 7 in points (40) in the NAIA and No. 2 in the SAC. 

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Drovers will be back in action on Tuesday, October 17 as they travel to Waxahachie, Texas to face Southwestern Assemblies of God University. The women are scheduled to kick-off at 5:00 PM CT, followed by the men at 7:30 PM.
